The Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture was founded on a partnership
between
Koorie Women Mean Business, Binjirru Regional Council (ATSIC), and La
Trobe University - former Womens studies and the Aboriginal Liason
Unit. The lecture is free and open to the public at La Trobe Universitys,
Bundoora Campus.
Lecture Speakers to date include: Jacqui Katona, former CEO Gundjemi Aboriginal
Corporation, Geoff Clark - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission,
Chairman and Professor Lowitja O Donoghue AC,CBE, the Yorta Yorta
Native Title Claimants, and Judge Ross Howie.
Hyllus Maris
Hyllus Maris was a descendant of the Yorta Yorta people a leader and visionary
poet whose initiatives in Aboriginal education included the establishment
n 1983 of Worawa College, the first registered independent college for
Aboriginals in Victoria. Hyllus Maris was also a singer, musician, poet,
and screenwriter. She co-wrote Women of the Sun, which won a number of
prestigious awards including the United Nations Media Peace Prize and
the Australian Writers Guild Awards in 1983.
