Cultural Values

Elders expressed concern at the continued loss of cultural values within the community. There is an urgent need for family groups to take responsibility to ensure that cultural values are maintained and transferred to younger generations.

The group expressed concern that unless family groups take action to ensure cultural maintenance including the teaching of cultural values, our culture will become part of a big melting pot of the broader Australian society. Respect for the land, Elders, kinship are all important cultural values however Elders are concerned that because of the pressures of society our young people today are not learning the value of kinship, respect for themselves and for others, respect for their Elders and respect for the land. Elders want to see strategies in place to pass on cultural values otherwise this aspect of the culture will fade with future generations.
